Earlier today, Attorney Washington released the following statement:

The attack on Anthony Johnson, Jr. was not an isolated incident but sadly a horrible display of the longstanding pattern and practice that flourished under the leadership of Sheriff Waybourn and Executive Chief Deputy Charles Eckert. Anthony is no longer alive due to the inhumane treatment, lack of compassion, egregious and unconscionable actions, inexcusable neglect, and cowardice acts of Tarrant County Jailers Joe Garcia, Rafael Moreno and the John Doe Jailers. The actions of the Tarrant County jailers are a result of the lack of oversight, training, supervision, and policies that have remained the same for decades. Anthony's tragic death could have been prevented had Sheriff Waybourn and Executive Chief Deputy Eckert made substantive changes after the sixty plus in-custody deaths that occurred since 2017 and prior to Anthony's death. We will find the underlying cause of it. There are families who are still trying to figure out what happened to their loved ones, which is unacceptable. We want that to change immediately. We want to know why someone with a mental illness would not be segregated from the general population or placed in a cell that has not been searched and cleaned. We need answers.”
